Overview

If you provide unpaid care to an adult, you may be entitled to support for yourself. This support is about you, your wellbeing and what helps you continue caring in a way that works for you. You do not need to live with the person you care for or provide care full time to get help.

Carer’s assessment

If you are over 18 and provide regular unpaid care for someone, you can request a carer’s assessment.

You have the right to ask for a carer's assessment, even if the person you care for does not want, or is not eligible for, social care support for themselves.

If you are under 18, you can request an assessment as a young carer

A carer’s assessment is not about making a judgement of how well you provide care. It is a voluntary, confidential conversation. It focuses on:

  • the support you provide
  • how caring affects your life
  • what may help you now or in the future

It can take place at a time and place that suits you. The person you care for does not need to be there. The assessment covers:

  • your role as a carer
  • how you feel about caring
  • whether you are able or willing to continue caring
  • your health and wellbeing
  • your work
  • other caring responsibilities
  • what you enjoy doing in your free time
  • planning for emergencies
