Benefits and financial support for carers
As a carer, you could be entitled to benefits or financial support. This can help with day‑to‑day living costs and recognising the support you provide.
Carer’s Allowance
If you care for someone for at least 35 hours a week and they receive certain benefits, you may be eligible for Carer’s Allowance. You do not need to be related to or living with the person you care for.
GOV.UK has more information about Carer’s Allowance, including:
- who can claim
- how it may affect other benefits
- how to make a claim
Other benefits you may be able to claim
Depending on your situation, you or the person you care for may also be able to claim:
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Credit
- Universal Credit
- Pension Credit
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
You can use the GOV.UK benefits calculator to check what you could claim.
Council Tax reductions
You may be eligible for a Council Tax reduction if you are an unpaid carer and live with the person you care for. You may also be entitled to a discount if changes have been made to your home to support a disabled person who lives there.
Carers discount card
You can register with the Carers Information Service to receive a free Carers Card. The card can be used to get discounts on services or goods at participating businesses.
Visit the BCP Carer Support website for more information and advice about benefits.
