Offence
It is an offence to not get the correct licence before any works and you could face a fine.
You will need the correct licence before any you can undertake any works on the highway (carriageway, footway, cycleway and verge).
There are 2 types of licence:
- NRSWA Section 50: to place, repair or retain apparatus in or on the highway
- Section 171: excavation on the highway
Before applying, you must make sure that you:
- get permission from the dropped kerb team if you are applying for a Section 171 to construct a dropped kerb
- fully complete your application with all of the correct dates, location and activities
- have been granted planning permission (if required)
- meet the minimum time scales in your application
- have a street works accreditation under NRSWA 1991
- have applied for a Temporary Traffic Order and temporary traffic signals (if required)
- have valid public liability insurance of £10 million or above
- have approval from the owner of the apparatus you are connecting
