Overview

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) compensates for any injury, illness or death which was caused by service on or after 6 April 2005.

There are 2 main types of AFCS awards:

  • a tax free lump sum payment for pain and suffering
  • a Guaranteed Income Payment (GIP) which is a tax free, index linked monthly payment

You automatically qualify for a Blue Badge if you have received a lump sum benefit within tariff levels 1 to 8 of the AFCS and have been certified as having a permanent and substantial disability that causes inability to walk or very considerable difficulty in walking.

You will be asked to provide evidence that you receive AFCS payments when you apply.

You may still be eligible if you do not meet this exact criteria. Find out what other circumstances may make you eligible for a Blue Badge.
