Overview
A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is a grant to help towards the costs of making changes to your home so it works better for you or someone you live with. These changes make it easier to move around, stay safe and live independently.
You might want to apply if you or someone in your household:
- has a physical disability
- has a learning disability
- is an older person
- is autistic
- lives with a cognitive impairment, like dementia
- lives with a progressive condition, like motor neurone disease
- is receiving end-of-life support
- is experiencing mental health challenges
If you need small adaptations that cost under £1,000 such as installing handrails or lever taps, you do not need to apply for a grant as these are usually provided free of charge.
What the grant can help with
Grants are only available for changes recommended by an occupational therapist and may include:
- widening doors and installing ramps or grab rails
- improving access to rooms and facilities, for example with a stairlift, or level access shower
- improving access to your garden
- building an extension, for example a downstairs bedroom
- providing a heating system suitable for your needs
- adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
The occupational therapy team work with a grants team technical officer to plan and design the changes. If there are changes you'd like that are not recommended by them, they will not be covered under the grant and you will need to pay for them.
Who does the works
If you're eligible for the grant, we will refer you to an approved contractor to carry out the work.
You can choose another contractor to carry out the work, however they must be approved by us.
If you are a contractor, you can apply to join our advisory list of Disabled Facilities Grant contractors.
More information is available in our Disabled Facilities Grant policy.
