Bikeability school courses

We offer our free Bikeability courses to all of our primary and secondary schools, to Year 4 and above. Our aim is for every child in primary school to have achieved their Bikeability Level 2 (residential road cycle training) before they leave for secondary school.

If your child is in year 6 and has not yet had Bikeability offered to them in their school, email bikeability@bcpcouncil.gov.uk so we can contact the school to book their course in.

We run Bikeability school courses throughout the year, offering the following courses:

  • Learn to ride - for children who are unable to ride independently, held on the school playground
  • Level 1 - a playground-based skills course, designed to teach your child the skills they will need when riding on the road, but in a playground setting, ideal for younger children to learn bike control
  • Level 2 - for children aged 9 and above, providing cycle training to help build the skills and confidence needed to ride a bike safely on residential roads, using the local roads surrounding your child’s school
  • Level 3 - for children aged 11 and above, or who have already completed Level 2 and have been deemed ready for Level 3 by your school’s Bikeability instructor, the course will give your child the confidence to tackle a wider variety of traffic conditions on more challenging roads and junctions

Course dates

Courses run throughout the year and depend on when your school wants to hold a course. We can run them for the entire year group at one time, or come back later during the school year to deliver to different year groups or additional students.

How to organise a course

Each school has their own Bikeability school course coordinator who will work with the school to organise the best course for the school at a time that suits them.

If your coordinator has not yet been in touch with your school, or you do not know if a course has been organised for your child’s school, email us at bikeability@bcpcouncil.gov.uk.

We are a small team so bear with us when waiting for a reply - we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Bikeability instructors

Our instructors are all fully qualified to the National Standard, DBS checked and trained in first aid. They also receive regular safeguarding and SEND training.
