How we are making an Age-friendly Community

We have teamed up with partners to make our community more age-friendly. We believe that talking about healthy ageing and improving accessibility can help everyone, including future generations.

Our Age-friendly Community aims (2026 to 2028)

Our aims for 2026 to 2028 are to:

  • develop community-based approaches that help people to age well, reduce isolation, maintain independence and build resilience
  • build a strong network of organisations, services and communities committed to embedding age-friendly practice
  • reduce ageism and remove barriers to ageing well across attitudes, services and environments
  • learn and share what works, locally and nationally, to inspire and improve practice

Together, these aims support local priorities and are informed by national and international evidence on ageing well. They are also shaped by local insight, including our State of Ageing report, which helps us understand the experiences of people aged 50 years and over and shape our priorities.

What we are doing

We are already taking action to make our communities in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole more age friendly.

Challenging ageism

Our Vintage Icons campaign celebrates older people and challenges stereotypes about ageing. Alongside the campaign, our Ageism Awareness Training helps individuals and organisations recognise and challenge ageist attitudes, language and assumptions, creating more inclusive communities where people of all ages are valued and respected.

Creating more age-friendly places and high streets

We are working with Bournemouth Town Centre Business Improvement Districts and partners to improve accessibility and create welcoming space in Bournemouth Town Centre.
