Acceptable use policy for public PCs

By continuing and using this service, you agree to the terms below of this policy, which provides free access in an open environment.

Violations may lead to suspension or termination of access, prosecution, and cooperation with law enforcement or legal authorities where any evidence will be handed over.

  • Library Cards and PINs: Do not share your library card or PIN with others. Use a unique PIN for security.
  • Printing: You must pay for all print-outs at the displayed rate unless there is a printer malfunction.
  • Staff Assistance: Library staff may offer help with computer use; please consider other Library users.
  • Internet Use: You are not authorised to access, share, or transmit pornographic, obscene, illegal, or violent content - including material that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, defamatory, infringing, harassing, or racially or ethnically offensive. Such actions may constitute a criminal offence.
  • Computer Settings: You must not deliberately change computer settings, install software, bypass security, or control other computers. Violations will result in suspension.
  • File Storage: It is your responsibility to save your files to a memory stick or cloud storage. Files are not stored on library computers.
  • Copyright: You must adhere to all relevant UK copyright legislation when using or copying material. Ask staff if unsure.
  • Noise and Privacy: You must avoid unnecessary noise and respect the privacy of other users.
  • Equipment Use: You must ensure cables do not pose safety hazards and must not connect unsanctioned equipment to Public PCs. Sanctioned equipment is compatible items that provide storage or computer audio without the need for installation, at the discretion of BCP Council Libraries and/or ICT staff. Unsanctioned equipment is:
    • Any device designed or inserted to cause harm to the system or other users.
    • Any device that either the BCP Libraries or IT staff have requested removed.
  • Use of the Service to send unsolicited emails (spam), including collecting responses, is prohibited.
  • Connected devices: Please check whether anything suspicious is connected to the PC and inform library staff immediately if anything is noticed.
  • Responsibility: BCP Council Library Service is not responsible for network issues, viruses, or data loss.
  • Online Transactions: You may buy and sell goods online, but BCP Council Library Service is not liable for any issues with those transactions undertaken.
