Highways searches

When purchasing a property or land, you or your solicitor can request a highway search.

A standard highway search includes:

  • information about the property's relationship to public highways
  • the extent of the adopted highway
  • any intervening land between the property and the public highway
  • public rights of way affecting the property or land
  • highway schemes in the vicinity
  • traffic regulation orders (TROs) in the area
  • a plan showing the extent of the adopted highway in relation to the property

Highway search charges

The standard search fee is £75 which includes responses to all standard questions and a plan showing the extent of adopted highway and rights of way.

There are also the following optional fees:

  • additional technical question: £18
  • highways extent plan/additional plan: £20
  • large site (>200m): £85
  • S38/S278 enquiry: £15
  • expedited turnaround (5 working days): £95

All fees include VAT.

How to request a highway search

You can request a highway search by emailing tenghelpdesk@bcpcouncil.gov.uk.

A payment link and reference number will be sent to you, and once payment has been received we will process your search and provide a response within 10 working days (5 if expedited).
