“I could have just given up, but volunteering gave me something to do, a purpose.”

The Access to Partnership recently came together to celebrate and recognise the contribution of volunteers helping deliver food support services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

An ex-offender, John has been a volunteer at a Poole social supermarket since July last year. He had previously struggled with a gambling addiction before getting therapy and support to help him get back on his feet.

“After moving into a flat in Poole, I knew I couldn't go back to my old life and needed to make changes. I’m a hard worker – I previously owned a housing clearance firm – and being out and about and active is important to me.

“I didn’t know where I was going to volunteer or if anyone would be willing to take me on. The social supermarket was the first place I went to.

“I wasn’t sure if I should tell the truth about my past but as I spoke to the Manager, I soon felt at ease so decided to go for it and explain what had happened. I am so grateful to have been given a chance.”

“I work most of the week and I’m responsible for managing and maintaining our stock of surplus food. It’s really varied, and every day is different. I also get to work with a great team working together to help other local people. We all volunteer for different reasons. It’s given me a sense of purpose and I wouldn’t be ‘me’ without it.”

Our food support partners simply wouldn’t be able to do what they do without the help of volunteers. If you can offer some time, even a few hours a week, you can find your nearest food project on our Map App.
