In December 2022 Feed Our Community, the Grounded Community food distribution project in Bournemouth, and other community food projects across Christchurch, Bournemouth and Poole were up in the early hours of Christmas Day distributing frozen turkeys and other surplus food donated by supermarkets.

This year, community food partners have joined forces to create a short-term storage facility called the One Stop Glut Hut which provides free bookable ambient, fridge and freezer space for up to 10 days, a chargeable kitchen preparation space, a common store where produce can be shared with other food projects via the Bulk Food WhatsApp group, and a packing table to portion up bulk and packing tables.

“Based in Boscombe, the One Stop Glut Hut will help food projects make the most of unexpected food donations, enabling them to temporarily store and share with other partners so it can be distributed to those most in need,” says George Godfrey, Project Coordinator.

“The premise has ample fridges and freezers to ensure that no food goes to waste and it can be safely stored over Christmas and January. The food given can be used in emergency food parcels, at foodbanks and community fridges, and in recipes for those attending community meals.”

The hut was made possible with a £7,500 BCP Food and Energy grant, distributed by Dorset Community Foundation on behalf of the government’s Household Support Fund, and will be available for use 24/7 until 31 January 2024.
