We meet Kathy Grubb, a volunteer at West Howe Community Enterprises.
“We get over 90 people at our community fridge, all doing their but to combat food waste. We are proud that we can pass on surplus food from supermarkets, charities and local growers to anyone that needs or wants it.”
Volunteer Kathy Grubb and her son Matthews joined West Howe Community Enterprises, based at the Henry Brown Centre, earlier this year, taking over from Kate Porges who established the community fridge last December.
Kathy gives her time and energy for free, spending her evenings and weekends collecting donations from local supermarkets and getting it ready for the community fridge, held on Mondays and Thursdays from midday to 2pm.
“With the support of We are Humans Canford Heath, who help us to keep the fridge running, we can provide a range of food, from fresh vegetables to baked goods. It differs from week to week so I also give suggestions on what you can make and cook, and ways to use it up in soups, stews and by freezing”, says Kathy.
And it doesn’t stop there. Kathy also helps pack food parcels for the most vulnerable in the community, signposts people to housing and Citizens Advice at the Wednesday drop-in sessions and lends a hand at the lunch club every first and third Monday of the month.
“I grew up in West Howe so I’m passionate about helping people. There really is a whole range of different services and activities available at the centre. Everyone is welcome, so come in, have a cuppa and a chat.”
