BCP Council Handyvan service

Residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are set to benefit from a major shift in adult social care, as BCP Council introduces a new prevention strategy aimed at helping people stay healthy, connected and independent for longer.

Prevention and early intervention in adult social care mean taking proactive steps to help reduce the need for long-term care and unnecessary hospital admissions.

Councillor David Brown, BCP Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We want people to live the lives they choose, in the communities they love. By putting prevention at the heart of adult social care and intervening sooner, we can help residents to live independently for longer.

“From digital tools that make advice and support easier to access, to reablement services that help people recover at home after illness or injury, the focus is on acting early and making everyday life simpler and safer.”

What the new strategy means for residents:

  • Expanding practical help at home -

Recognising the preventative role of existing services such as the Handyvan Service, BCP Council is reviewing how practical support, alongside new initiatives, could reach more residents, helping prevent problems early, reduce isolation and make daily life easier and safer.
  • Technology and therapy for early intervention -

BCP Council is introducing care technology, occupational therapy and expert advice early, so residents and carers can manage health confidently and avoid crisis situations.
  • Partnerships that prevent problems before they start -

By working with health and housing teams, BCP Council will share clear advice, like fall-prevention tips and home safety checks, so residents can stay safe and well at home.

The council’s approach to prevention has been shaped by the voices of over 400 residents, carers, professionals and partners who shared their experiences and hopes for the future of adult social care.

The Adult Social Care Prevention Strategy 2025–2030 sets out a collaborative approach between the council, partners and communities to help residents in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole stay healthy, independent and connected for longer.

By focusing on early intervention and prevention, the strategy aims to reduce the need for crisis support, improve wellbeing, and ease pressure on health and care services across the area.

The prevention strategy is at an early stage, and BCP Council will share further information and updates as they are rolled out to residents and people in receipt of services.
