Residents and businesses are invited to have their say on draft plans to tackle the climate and ecological emergency and make Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole carbon neutral in the future.
As part of a new consultation launched today (4 January) the council is seeking feedback on a draft 2050 Climate Action Plan for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
With more than 150 actions that could be taken if the area is to meet its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2050, the draft plan considers a range of proposals that could see significant changes to the area. From enhanced sustainable travel options, waste reduction schemes, alternative land uses, nature preservation, and many more the council is inviting residents to get involved and have their say and help shape future plans.
Councillor Mike Greene, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said:
"We are pleased to launch the consultation on the draft 2050 Climate Action Plan for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. This is about providing all our residents the opportunity to have their say on the plans we could take when it comes to meeting our carbon reduction targets.
"We recognise that the coronavirus pandemic has meant everyday life has changed for many people, and in line with the government’s steer, now is the time to ensure we plan for a ‘green recovery’ and shape a sustainable future for everyone.
"We all have a part to play in ensuring we stay on the road to zero by 2050 commitment, and as a council we are absolutely committed to taking a balanced approach, ensuring we consider the full impact of any future actions we may need to take to help meet those targets.
"This consultation is an ideal opportunity for residents and businesses to tell us what they think are the key priorities, and we are encouraging all residents and businesses to have their say and help shape future plans.
"It’s important to recognise that this is about ensuring we take a place-based approach to meet our carbon reduction targets, and that includes working with our key partners and organisations across the public and private sectors. Through the proposed Climate Action Leadership Board, we have an opportunity to consider activities beyond the council’s activities and work together towards a sustainable future."
As part of the new consultation, local people are being encouraged to complete an online survey and prioritise the actions set out in the draft 2050 Climate Action Plan creating an open conversation about climate change. Feedback gathered through the survey will help shape the final plan and contribute to the delivery of actions included.
In addition to the survey the council will be sharing information and ideas about what you can do to help, how you can get further involved and asking you what you would be prepared to do differently in order to tackle climate change.
