A beautiful silver birch tree, planted as part of the Queen's Canopy initiative now stands in the centre of Winton Library’s refreshed garden.

Planted by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell, the tree stands alongside one of the first of a series of Jubilee benches made from completely recycled materials.

BCP Council is proud to support the BH9 Business Community Volunteers and their vision to create a free, interactive outdoor gallery which can be enjoyed by the whole community throughout the year.

The volunteers have been working with residents and specialist garden volunteers to bring their vision to life.

The Garden is currently being cleared before a selection of wildflowers are planted. These flowers will be a magnet for wildlife and act as an ever-changing backdrop for a variety of outdoor art installations which will be housed throughout the garden for the community to enjoy. Bird boxes and bug hotels will also boost biodiversity.

Councillor Nigel Hedges, Chairman of BCP Council said: "Projects like this bring our local communities together. I used to get my books from this Library when I was a child, and I will always remember the garden as a place of tranquillity. I am so looking forward to seeing what the BH9 Business Community volunteers achieve and huge congratulations to everyone involved. This is going to be a real asset and will only continue to get better."

Councillor Simon Bull, East Winton Ward, BCP Council also said: "I am so pleased to see these gardens getting the attention needed to be able to open them for community use. I thank the volunteers and BH9 Business Community for taking up the baton following the reopening of the upper section, and the Council Parks Team for their ongoing support."

Local artists will be approached in the hope that they will create and exhibit pieces of sculpture that will enthuse audiences and act as an introduction to art which many may not have had the opportunity to view before.

To promote the re-opening of the garden, the BH9 Business community will hold a free, inclusive event at the end of the school summer holidays to showcase the creation of this new cultural asset to Winton.

A time capsule will be buried in the garden this September to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and will feature drawings from local children.
