For BCP Council foster carer Dave, being a 'second-hand dad' isn’t about labels, it’s about being there when a child needs stability, care and someone who believes in them.
Dave has been fostering with Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council for many years and describes the role as one of the most rewarding things he has ever done. Recently, one of the young people he cares for wrote a heart-warming poem about their ‘second-hand dad’, a touching reflection, shared in the child’s own words, on what it means to have a safe, caring and consistent adult in their life.
The poem, can be heard on BCP Council’s social media channels during Foster Care Fortnight (11 to 24 May), a national campaign highlighting the vital role foster carers play and encouraging more people to consider fostering.
Dave said: “Being a ‘second-hand dad’ isn’t about replacing anyone, it’s about being there and letting a child know they matter.
“Fostering has its challenges, but the positives far outweigh them. Knowing you’ve made a difference and even being compared to a chocolate s’more (a chocolate and marshmallow biscuit treat), is incredibly rewarding.”
Cllr Richard Burton, BCP Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education and Skills, said: “Foster carers like Dave and his wife Pat make an extraordinary difference to the lives of children and young people in our area. Foster Care Fortnight is a chance to recognise that impact and encourage more people to think about fostering.
“You don’t need to be perfect, just patient, caring and open to making a difference. You won't be alone, BCP Council fostering team provides full training, financial support and professional guidance throughout the journey.”
As part of Foster Care Fortnight, BCP Council is inviting residents to attend a free online fostering information session for anyone interested in finding out more. The informal session will take place on Monday 18 May, from 12.30pm to 1.15pm (online) and offers a friendly, no pressure opportunity to learn more about fostering, hear from the team and ask questions.
In addition, the fostering team will be out in the community, hosting an information stand on Friday 22 May from 10am to 12pm at Tesco, Riverside Avenue, Bournemouth BH7 7DY, where people can meet the team in person, pick up information and have an informal chat.
