Cultural activity in BCP

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) are ready to officially enter the race to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028—putting the area’s creativity, communities and cultural ambition firmly in the national spotlight.

Ahead of the 31 March deadline, BCP Council will submit an expression of interest to the programme, uniting Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole in a joint bid that shows the three towns are stronger together.

The competition is open to towns of all sizes across the UK and will see an expert panel shortlist three places later this year. The overall winner will receive £3 million to deliver a Town of Culture programme in 2028, with two runners-up each awarded £250,000. Shortlisted towns will also receive £60,000 to help develop a full bid later in 2026.

Drawing on the voices and experience of arts venues, cultural organisations, grassroots groups and community partners, the proposal showcases BCP’s thriving cultural scene and a shared identity inspired by our coastline and natural environment.

At the heart of the BCP bid is a focus on people‑powered culture—celebrating local creativity, opening up access to the arts and creating opportunities for more residents to take part, shape activity and share their stories.

Councillor Andy Martin, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Communications and Customer, said: “We’re proud of our cultural offer, but what makes the BCP area special is the people behind it—community groups, volunteers, artists, young people and residents who bring creativity to life every day.

“This bid is a fantastic opportunity to open more doors, reach new audiences and celebrate local stories from across all three towns. The more people who get involved, the stronger—and more representative—our Town of Culture journey will be.”
