Renew your taxi and private hire drivers licence

You must apply to renew your licence no earlier than 2 months and no later than 10 working days before the expiry date, to make sure your licence continues to be valid.

If you do not submit all of the necessary paperwork by the expiry date, your licence will expire.

You will receive reminders to renew your licence via email, around 2 months before the expiry date. Reminders are sent out as a courtesy – it is your responsibility to renew your licence on time. You must make sure that you keep your email address up to date or you will not receive any reminders.

Documents you will need when applying

All renewal applications can now be submitted online. Before you complete your application, make sure you have digital copies of the documents you'll need.

The renewal guidance document has more information about the information you'll need.

Proof of identity/right to work

  • a British passport
  • an Irish passport or passport card

If you are not a British or Irish citizen, you can prove your right to work with:

Proof of current residential address

Proof of your address must be in the form of an official letter such as a utility bill or bank or credit card statement dated within 3 months of your application. This must match the address on your driving licence.

Enhanced DBS certificate

You must hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate registered with the DBS Update Service.

If previously submitted, provide the certificate number on the application.

If the certificate has been obtained via another provider, you will need to submit a copy of the original certificate and ensure that under the employment details it states “position applied for: other workforce – taxi driver.” If this is not the case, a new DBS application is required.

Tax conditionality

You will need to apply for a tax check code and provide the 9-character code on your application.

Safeguarding training certificate

Safeguarding training must be refreshed every 3 years. Only certificates from our approved providers are accepted.

Certificates must be dated within 12 months of your renewal application.

DVLA driving licence check

You must request a share code from the DVLA website when renewing your licence.

Submit your application

Use our online form to start your application.

We will not continue to process your application and your licence will be suspended from the expiry date if:

  • the application form is not fully completed
  • there are incorrect details on the application or accompanying documents
  • documents are missing

Applications made after the renewal date will not be accepted. Instead, it will be treated as a new application. You will not be able to drive until all of the requirements for a new driver application have been met.
