Primate keepers licence

Keeping a primate without a licence is an offence

From 6 April 2026, keeping a primate without a licence is an offence and could result in an unlimited fine or up to 6 months imprisonment.

From 6 April 2026, anyone keeping one or more primates will require a licence. Existing private keepers can apply for a licence from this date.

Species covered include:

  • marmosets
  • tamarins
  • squirrel monkeys
  • spider monkeys
  • capuchins
  • lemurs
  • lorisids (bush babies)

Fees

The fee is £447 for a full licence and £425 for keeping or training animals exclusively for exhibition.
