Under the Renters' Rights Act, Trading Standards can take action if a landlord:

• discriminates against you because you have children or receive benefits
• asks people to bid against each other above the advertised rent (rental bidding)
• asks for too much rent in advance - a landlord will only be able to require up to one month’s rent (or 28 days’ rent for tenancies with rental periods of less than one month)
•  does not clearly display the rent amount
