You can apply for an additional rubbish or recycling bin if you live in a household with either:

  • 5 or more people living there permanently
  • 2 or more children in nappies
  • someone who has a medical condition that creates extra waste

There is a charge for this service:

  • £45 for an additional rubbish bin
  • £55 for an additional recycling bin

If you use our bag and box alternative service, you can request extra rubbish sacks. The charge for additional sacks is £12.50 for 52 bags.

If you're in receipt of certain income based benefits you may be able to have an additional bin free of charge. You may be eligible if you receive:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit - Guarantee Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Council Tax Support

You must provide evidence of any income-based benefits when asked to avoid any delay in your application.

Your application will be assessed by a waste officer who will decide if you can have an extra bin.

If you apply for an additional bin, you are confirming that you meet the criteria. No bin will be delivered if information you provide is not correct.

Responsibility and ownership of bins

Bins remain our property and you may be required to return the bin on our request.

At all times, other than collection day, you are responsible for the care and placement of the bin.

If your household is no longer eligible for the extra bin you must contact us to arrange for the removal of the bin.

We may also remove the bin if it is misused or if the household no longer meets the criteria.

Moving Home

If you are moving to a property outside Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole you must contact us to arrange for the removal of the bin.

If you are moving to a different property in Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole you must take the extra bin(s) with you and contact us so that we can update our records.

If a move has taken place and bins have not been taken to your new property or if the bin is removed, no refunds or part-refunds are given.
