Weights and measures

Weights and measures

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council is responsible for ensuring that consumers receive accurate, correct measures of the products that they purchase. These regulations are informed by the Office of Product Safety and Standards.

Weights and measures inspections

We visit trade premises and carry out inspections and verification of weighing and measuring equipment.

Examples include:

  • counter weighing machines
  • weighbridges
  • weights
  • petrol pumps
  • spirit measuring instruments
  • wine and beer glasses
  • metre measures
  • pre-packed goods, breads, textiles and more.

Most weighing and measuring equipment used by businesses must, by law, be approved before use. We offer this service to local businesses. If you would like an item of equipment verified, contact trading standards.

Business guidance

Free guidance leaflets for businesses on weights and measures are available at Business Companion.
