The Twin Sails Bridge reopened today (Wednesday 27 May), following the completion of the latest stage of repairs.
Despite challenges presented by Covid-19, initial works to replace the second pin on the Hamworthy side of the Twin Sails Bridge began on Monday 4 May. This part of the repairs was carried out successfully and the second pin has been removed.
Following testing the bridge has now been reopened. This has been done in advance of planned surfacing works taking place on West Quay Road which require Poole Bridge to be closed to vehicles. The resurfacing was postponed at the start of lockdown and will now take place over two days from Thursday 28 to Friday 29 May. Pedestrian and cyclist access over Poole Bridge will be maintained throughout the West Quay Road works with other road users directed over Twin Sails.
Longer term work on Twin Sails is still required and the review to rectify the issues with the bridge continues. Future works include the installation of a new pin to replace the one that has been removed.
Councillor Andy Hadley, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, said:
"I am pleased we have been able to reopen Twin Sails ahead of the surfacing works taking place on West Quay Road. Whilst we appreciate there will still be some disruption, it’s essential that works take place this week whilst people are still advised to stay at home as much as possible and ahead of the anticipated increase in traffic when schools return from June 1. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.’’
