Ambitious plans to rejuvenate Southbourne Beach and provide residents and visitors with a much-improved experience are a step closer, with a new proposal for dining, socialising and accommodation.

Luxury modern beach lodges, a brand-new restaurant, and public facilities all feature as part of the exciting plans for the site currently occupied by Bistro on the Beach.

Led by BCP Council the plans will see the existing building replaced with a brand-new modern development boasting smooth flowing architecture, and an expansive glass frontage offering fantastic views of the multi award-winning beach and sea beyond.

Providing a year-round destination for residents that sits on the same footprint as the existing beach facilities, it will provide a spacious contemporary restaurant with external seating, a takeaway kiosk, modern toilets, beach showers, cycle parking and 17 overnight stay lodges, similar to the Bournemouth Beach Lodges at the nearby Manor Steps.

Cllr Mohan Iyengar, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure, and Culture at BCP Council, says,

"We are keen to share the new design with residents. It delivers a much-improved service in a venue that fits into the natural surround. The current building has reached a poor state and we hope residents will consider the new scheme a worthy replacement. But we’ll take the feedback along with broader comments that will come through on the seafront strategy – and make adjustments where necessary. This is one of several potential ideas for the seafront as we look to safeguard and protect our coastline while developing it in the right way for residents and visitors."

  • The proposed design has been reviewed by an independent assessment through a Design Review Panel.
  • Local residents are invited to attend a public online information session on 9 September from 6.30-7.30pm. To register for the event please contact seafrontprojects@bcpcouncil.gov.uk
  • Subject to feedback, a full planning application is intended to be submitted later in September.
