The two mortality support facilities that were activated as part of Dorset’s response to a possible worst-case scenario during the current Covid-19 emergency are to be placed on standby.
As part of the Excess Deaths Operational Plan, changes are being made to the services provided at the Mortality Support Facility (MSF) at Poole Port, and the similar facility at the Old Radio Station, Dorchester.
Over the last two weeks, the number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 in Dorset and nationally has been declining. Availability of the two facilities and extra Government-supplied capacity have been reconsidered.
The facilities will remain on standby and can be reopened within 72 hours if the need arises.
Data on Covid-19 cases and any associated deaths will continue to be monitored and the facilities will be activated if they are needed.
Councillor Vikki Slade, Leader of BCP Council, said:
"I would like to offer my condolences to those who have lost family and friends during Covid-19.
Although the temporary sites are standing down due to a decrease of deaths in the area, I would encourage our residents to continue to follow national guidance, including to self-isolate if you or your family are showing any symptoms."
Councillor Spencer Flower, Leader of Dorset Council said:
"We are pleased that residents of Dorset have observed the Government’s guidelines, and this means that our infection rates have remained low. But we ask everyone to continue the good work to keep everyone safe.
My heartfelt thoughts go to those people who have lost loved ones during this pandemic."
Representatives from BCP Council, Dorset Council, The Coroner, Dorset Police, The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, faith groups, Funeral Directors and celebrants are working together to make sure the potential bereavement needs across the county are identified and met.
