Cabinet will consider a proposed seafront development this month (20 December).
The super hut development at Fisherman’s Walk, Bournemouth will comprise of 15 huts to be built by the Council and made available for sale on a 25-year sub-lease. This scheme builds on previous successful ventures including at Durley Chine, Alum Chine and a previous development at Fisherman’s Walk which have generated over £2.1m in sales revenue within the last 5 years. The development is designed to maximise the efficient use of council assets and generate a capital return to support wider council services.
Three areas are being evaluated for the development. Typically, these areas have been chosen to be away from the busier beaches with good access to a range of amenities such as fresh water taps, kiosks and toilets and placed for access to parking on the cliff top nearby. Once a final development site has been selected, any existing beach huts affected by the proposed development will be relocated close by, and tenants will be informed prior to any planning application submitted.
Councillor Lewis Allison, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure and Communities said
"This is an exciting new development which will build on the current success of beach huts in the area. The super huts will provide people the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful seafront and all that is has to offer."
Super huts are larger than the standard beach hut and are supplied unfurnished with no utilities for day time use. The tenant pays an annual service charge to the council and takes responsibility for repair and maintenance. Demand for super huts and beach huts in general continues to remain strong, with long waiting lists in some areas.
Subject to approval, site works would commence winter 2020 for completion by Easter 2021.
