Young volunteers at our libraries

Do you want to meet new people and develop new skills whilst supporting your library? Contact your local library to find out if they need volunteers and how you could help.

Many of our library branches offer volunteering opportunities for young people aged 13 to 18 throughout the year. Volunteering regularly is a rewarding experience and a great way to develop skills, meet new people, and gain experience that can go on your CV. Those doing the volunteering as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and other accreditation schemes are welcome to apply.

Choose a branch

You will need to consider how you will travel to and from the branch you are applying to and make sure that this is something you can do easily. Most applicants therefore choose a branch that they live near to, but you are welcome to choose any BCP Library as long as you can arrange your own transport.

Apply

We are a popular choice for young volunteers, so positions are in high demand. Please make sure that you apply well before the start date you are looking for.

You can request a copy of our application form.

Please return the form to your first choice library branch as an attachment via email, or in person.

If you are over 18, you will need to apply to be an adult volunteer.

Once you have applied

If the library branch you have applied to is able to support a placement, they will be in touch to invite you in for an informal interview and to talk through next steps. If they are unable to support your placement on this occasion, they can pass on your application to a second choice branch.

If your first and second choice are at full capacity, you are welcome to approach another library and start the application process again. We will always do our best to place applicants, but we are a very popular choice and often receive more applications than we are able to support.

For specific questions about volunteering roles, please speak to library staff at the branch you are applying to, or contact the library via email.
