Work experience at our libraries

Many of our library branches offer work experience placements for young people. Placements typically last for one week and provide an insight into working in the library service. Young people will work closely with library assistants to ensure the smooth running of the library, and will support with events, activities, and special projects.

Choose a branch

You will need to consider how you will travel to and from the branch you are applying to and make sure that this is something you can do easily. Most applicants therefore choose a branch that they live near to, but you are welcome to choose any BCP Library as long as you can arrange your own transport.

Apply

We are a very popular choice for work experience, so please apply as early as possible.

You can request a copy of our application form.

Please return to your first choice library branch as an attachment via email, or in person.

Once you have applied

If the library branch you have applied to is able to support a placement, they will be in touch to invite you in for an informal interview and to talk through next steps. If they are unable to support your placement on this occasion, they will pass on your application to a second choice branch.

If your first and second choice are at full capacity, you are welcome to approach another library and start the application process again. We will always do our best to place applicants, but we are a very popular choice and often receive far more applications than we are able to support.
