Staying with friends and family

If it’s a possibility for you to stay with family while you save up for a deposit or look for work, then this may be the best option. While many adults want to move into private rented accommodation, the housing shortage across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole means that the cost of housing is high.

This means it may be better to stay with parents or family where you’re more likely to have low accommodation costs until you’re in a better position financially. Ideally, you want to have a regular income and some savings for a deposit and rent in advance.

If you’re staying with family and they claim benefits to help with housing or Council Tax costs, it’s important that they declare you’re living there. Further information is available on Housing Benefit and Council Tax.

If you’re pregnant or have children, you can get advice and support from our housing options team who may be able to assist.

If you’re asked to leave home or cannot stay any longer, and you may be homeless, you should request a housing needs assessment, or explore your housing options.
