Free Access for National Sportspeople

The Free Access for National Sportspeople (FANS) scheme is a sports development initiative providing support to leading sports performers by reducing the financial burden of training costs.

The scheme provides nationally ranked sports people with free access to participating local authority leisure and sports facilities at designated times, for personal training and development.

Eligibility

The FANS scheme provides opportunities for sportspeople, of all ages, who are ranked in the top 10 of the national squad for their sport and who are resident in Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole.

Evidence or confirmation of a sportsperson’s involvement at a national level will be required from the appropriate governing body of sport. The 5 UK sports councils have a list of eligible sports.

Becoming a member

Individuals can apply by completing an application form and submitting evidence or confirmation of their performance level, endorsed by the appropriate national governing body.

If you’re accepted on the scheme, you’ll be given a photo ID membership card to enable free access which must be shown at each facility every time you visit.

Membership renewal

Membership is renewable annually, subject to continued performance at a national level. To renew your membership, send your sports development team a recent passport sized photo and current proof that you still retain your sporting status. They’ll then issue a new membership card.

Use of facilities

FANS members should meet with facility staff prior to their first session to agree areas to be used and available times.

You’ll be allowed 1 free training partner if the sport requires, and/or a personal coach if appropriate. However, all instructors or coaches must provide evidence of insurance cover when they first visit the centre.

If a coach is planning to accompany a FANS member under the age of 16, a letter of approval must be provided from the individual’s parents or guardians. Alternatively, the coach can provide proof of their attendance on a county child protection course.

Participants and coaches must wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

If you intend to use gym facilities, you’ll need to undertake an induction, which may need to be paid for.

Conditions of membership

In return for free access, FANS members should make every effort, within reason, to attend promotional events if asked by us or the facility.

We reserve the right to withdraw membership of FANS should any breach of the scheme occur.

We reserve the right to change the terms and conditions of the scheme, as well as withdraw the membership of any athlete deemed no longer to fit the criteria of the scheme or who is no longer operating within the ‘spirit’ of the scheme.
