There are a number of archaeological sites that can provide us with important insights into the history of the area. However, such sites are vulnerable to damage so need to be protected.
Scheduled ancient monuments
Archaeological sites and monuments which are considered to be nationally important may be included in the National Heritage List for England. This gives them legally protected status.
If you wish to carry out any work to a scheduled ancient monument you will need to apply to Historic England for scheduled monument consent. Further information and advice is available in Historic England’s guide for owners and occupiers.
Checking for archaeological remains
Before applying for planning permission, developers should check whether the site is likely to have archaeological remains. If there are remains, a field evaluation will need to be carried out to decide how we can preserve the site.
