People living with dementia

If you are living with dementia or caring for someone with dementia, we have a special library card which enables you to borrow books for up to 6 weeks, instead of the usual 3 weeks. Two audiobooks, music CDs and DVDs can also be borrowed free of charge per visit.

Reading Well for Dementia recommends titles you may find helpful if you have dementia, are caring for someone with dementia or would like to find out more about the condition. They are endorsed by health professionals and can all be found in your local library. Selected titles are also available to borrow as ebooks and audiobooks.

As well as a range of books on the condition, we have a complete set of ‘Pictures to Share’ books at Bournemouth libraries and at Christchurch and Poole libraries. These large-format books contain images accompanied by a few lines of text. Each picture has been chosen to help jog memories, spark comments and bring pleasure to the reader.

If you are unable to visit the library yourself, our free home library service may also be useful. Volunteers visit every 3 weeks with books or audiobooks.

Your local library will have details of shared reading groups and reminiscence sessions at which we welcome people with dementia and their carers.
