Marriage and civil partnership corrections

When entering a marriage or civil partnership it is the couple’s responsibility to check that the information on the marriage or civil partnership schedule is correct before signing. The couple must check that the information is accurate and spellings are correct. Signing this document is confirmation that the information is correct.

If you notice a mistake on your marriage or civil partnership record after you have signed the schedule, you can apply for a correction through the Register Office where the marriage or civil partnership was registered. You will need to print and complete the application form, make an appointment to see a registrar and bring the relevant original or certified documents to show what the correct information should have been at the time of the marriage or civil partnership. This correction application will then be sent to the General Register Office (GRO) to be approved and you will be told when the GRO has approved it. The fee is £90 to apply for a correction.

Be aware that your marriage or civil partnership record will always show the original information given at the time of the event and the corrected details will be shown as a marginal note.
