Essential repairs will be carried out on Towngate Bridge in Poole later this week as part of the multi-million Townside improvement scheme funded through the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership.

At the same time the repairs on Towngate Bridge are taking place, including the replacement of the movement joints, the whole Hunger Hill junction is being resurfaced, as well as the junction with Lifeboat Quay (Asda) and Towngate Bridge. To enable these works to be carried out a number of road closures are required.

In preparation for the resurfacing work, the old road surface is currently being removed on West Street (outside the RNLI). To enable this work to be carried out, a lane closure is in place so only one lane is available on West Street towards Hunger Hill.

From 8pm on Saturday 27 April until 6am on Monday 29 April, Towngate Bridge will be fully closed in both directions to enable bridge joints, waterproofing and resurfacing works to be carried out. On Sunday 28 April, the Holes Bay Road approach to Towngate Bridge will also be resurfaced during this closure.

There will be three consecutive full night closures on West Street in both directions between Hunger Hill and Marston Road from Monday 29 April until Wednesday 2 May, from 7pm until 6am only. This will also include:

a southbound-only closure of Towngate Bridge
no access to Towngate Bridge north-bound from West Quay Road
no right turn from Holes Bay Road (northbound) into Vanguard Road
no right turn from Holes Bay Road (southbound) into Lifeboat Quay (Asda etc)
no right turn from Lifeboat Quay (Asda etc) into Holes Bay Road

From 7pm on Thursday 2 May until 6am on Friday 3 May, the above three no right turns will continue:

no right turn from Holes Bay Road (southbound) into Lifeboat Quay (Asda etc)
no right turn from Lifeboat Quay (Asda etc) into Holes Bay Road
also no right turn from Holes Bay Road (northbound) into Vanguard Road

This is to enable resurfacing across the mouth of Lifeboat Quay. Traffic will be manually controlled for some of this work so please take care and follow the instructions from site operatives.

From 7pm on Friday 3 May until 6am the following morning, Holes Bay Road northbound will be closed between the junction with West Quay Road and the junction with Lifeboat Quay ie there will be no access to Asda or Holes Bay Road from the southbound direction.

Lynne Wait, Interim Engineering Manager, BCP Council, said: "The works at the Hunger Hill junction are moving into the final stages of the programme and the bridge and resurfacing works are the next key milestone in this major infrastructure project.

"We have carefully reviewed all the plans with the contractor to try and minimise the impact on local people. Most of the work is being carried out at night to minimise the disruption to businesses and road users ensuring businesses can continue to trade. Residents who may be affected by noise will be notified of the works via a letter drop and diversion routes will also be in place for HGVs.

"We are still on budget and on schedule to complete the main Hunger Hill improvements in June 2019."

Wider works are continuing to take place on West Street and West Quay Road, involving the completion of the links for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users from Hunger Hill to Poole Bridge plus improvements to public spaces and these works will continue until 2020.
