This year, Cycling UK’s Bike Week is all about cycling in the local community, and thanks to the work of south east Dorset’s Transforming Cities Fund programme, there are now plans for even more safe cycling routes around the region.

BCP Council has announced the roll out of over 130 new publicly accessible Electric Vehicle (EV) charger bays, to be installed at multiple locations across Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole over the next year. This huge expansion of Council-provided chargers, coupled with those offered by supermarkets and hotels in the conurbation will make the area one of the best places in the country to visit with or own an Electric Vehicle

Construction of new sustainable travel route on Wimborne Road, Poole to begin on 16 May 2022
Construction on the first section of new sustainable travel improvements along Wimborne Road in Poole town centre, will start on 16 May 2022. Funded through the south east Dorset Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), it marks the start of work on the 7km green travel route that will eventually link Poole town centre with Merley.
Pupils across the UK travel the equivalent of 110 times around the world during Sustrans’ Big Walk and Wheel competition
Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, the UK’s largest walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting to school challenge, saw school communities across the UK complete over 2.2 million active journeys and physical activities between Monday 21 March and Friday 1 April 2022. During the competition, over 7,700 school children from Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole (BCP) were walking, cycling, wheeling and scooting, contributing over 35,000 journeys and physical activities to the total.

Work on the new junction of Ringwood Road with Casterbridge Road in Ferndown (near the Angel Inn) has been completed on schedule. The improvements consist of an upgraded junction layout, which includes new pedestrian crossings, controlled by a new set of re-phased traffic lights.

Businesses across south east Dorset are being invited to apply for grants of between £500 and £20,000 to spend on new workplace facilities that encourage their employees to cycle or adopt sustainable travel to work.

BCP Council Secures Further Central Government Funding for Encouraging Cycling and Walking.
BCP Council has been successful in securing an extra £247,000 grant from Central Government to help encourage cycling and walking in the conurbation. The money has been awarded from the Department for Transport’s Capability Fund and is ringfenced specifically for activities that promote active travel.
