Christmas and New Year rubbish and recycling

Christmas waste collections 2022

Your rubbish, recycling and food waste collection dates will be changing over the festive period, as there will be no collections on Boxing Day, Monday 26 December. Instead, your usual collection day will be pushed back by one day, with our collection crews working on Saturday 31 December to accommodate for this change.

Revised bin collection dates
Usual collection dayRevised collection day
Monday 26 December Tuesday 27 December
Tuesday 27 December  Wednesday 28 December
Wednesday 28 December  Thursday 29 December
Thursday 29 December Friday 30 December
Friday 30 December Saturday 31 December

Please place your bin(s) out at the kerbside by 5am on your usual collection day, so they are clearly visible to our collection crews.

Our collection crews will be distributing bin hangers to every household from the end of the month. These will have the revised collection days on them (as above) as well as useful information about what can and can't be recycled, so please bring them inside and keep them as a useful recycling guide for the coming year.

Extra rubbish and recycling

We do not take extra bags of rubbish or recycling that are placed on top of or next to your bin. Please take any extra rubbish and recycling to one of our recycling centres:

All sites are open until 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

See our top tips to help reduce your festive waste this Christmas.

We do not collect Christmas trees with our rubbish or recycling collections, there are multiple options for recycling your Christmas tree.

Commercial waste

Commercial waste collection crews for refuse and recycling will be operating in the same way as our domestic waste above over the festive period. Please use the table above to find out when your commercial waste will be collected.

The commercial weighbridges at Millhams and Nuffield will be closed to trade customers from 3pm Friday 23 December 2022 and reopening on Tuesday 3 January 2023.

Other waste arrangements

Bin deliveries, bulky collections (Poole and Christchurch) and skips (Poole) will be closed from Monday 26 December 2022 and reopening Tuesday 3 January 2023.

Garden waste service

Across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, over 12,293 tonnes of garden waste has been collected and composted this year, up to October 2022.

The season runs until December, but residents who want to receive collections in 2023 can now register for the service securely online. To ensure you receive all 22 collections in 2023, please register by 16 December 2022.

If you decide not to join the 2023 collection service or have extra garden waste to dispose of, you can recycle it for free at one of our recycling centres. Alternatively, you can compost your garden waste at home using a compost bin - find out more about composting below.
