Respect, protect and enjoy our beaches

This summer, we and other agencies are working together to keep everyone safe through a summer readiness plan.

To keep our beaches and seafront clean, safe and enjoyable, there are some beach guidelines to follow. Familiarise yourself and don't fall foul of the rules.

Avoid the crowds

Our beaches are popular with visitors so plan ahead with the latest information for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Before you arrive, get up to the minute information on how busy the beaches and car parks are, by downloading our beach check app from your app store.  Everyone should continue to follow government guidance to protect yourself, your family, and those around you. If you feel that other people are too close, then please move to a section of the beach that is quieter and more comfortable. If in doubt, consider coming back at another time when it is quieter.

The RNLI provide beach safety in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, funded by us. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months at main beaches from 1 May to 30 September every year, from 10am to 6pm. For 2021 this has been extended and RNLI services will operate from 2 April at the following locations:

  • Sandbanks Beach
  • Bournemouth East Beach
  • Bournemouth West Beach
  • Boscombe East.

For exact locations, dates and patrol times of lifeguarded beaches across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, visit the RNLI website.

From 1 October 2021 to 1 April 2022, no on-site lifeguard services operate from our beaches.

Seafront litter

Our beach cleansing teams operate throughout the year clearing the beach. This summer 400 triple sized bins are being installed on the seafront. Littering threatens other people’s safety and local wildlife. Put rubbish in the bin, take it home and leave only footprints or risk a maximum fine of £150.

Seafront services

Beach offices are currently closed to the public.

Services may close during adverse weather and some parts of the promenade may be inaccessible due to wind blown sand.  This will be cleared by our seafront team but will take some time.

Land trains: a limited Bournemouth Pier to Boscombe Pier service is running.

The Cliff lifts at West Cliff and Fisherman's Walk are open from Easter until the end of October.

Visit Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers for opening times and prices.

Visit Boscombe Undercliff Drive car park for prices and information (this car park may close during adverse weather).

Beach furniture is available for day hire.

We have additional guidance on cycling on the seafrontdog walks and public toilets.
