Business rates payments

Our recovery process for non-payment has been reduced to give businesses a chance to:

  • claim any grants available
  • withhold or reduce payments whilst grants and reliefs are applied to accounts.

Chancellor Announcement made on 17 March 2020

Businesses that are in receipt of Small Business Rate Relief

  • businesses receiving Small Business Rates Relief will now get a grant of £10,000 (was previously announced as £3,000).

Retail, Hospitality and Leisure sectors

  • Shop, pub, theatre, music venue, restaurant - and any other business in the retail, hospitality or leisure sector – will pay no business rates for 12 months.

  • Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors, with a rateable value of less than £51,000 will have access to a cash grant of up to £25,000 per business.  

Local newspaper offices

  • The £1,500 business rates discount for office space used by local newspapers in England will be extended for an additional five years until 31 March 2025. 

 Public lavatories relief

  • 100% business rates relief for stand alone public lavatories in England from April 2020. 

Administration of these announcements

  • The Council are awaiting clear and detailed instructions from the Government following their announcement. When these are known further information will be posted here.
