Residents and visitors to Poole are looking forward to joining in the celebrations as Poole Maritime Festival showcases an amazing line-up of family entertainment throughout the whole of June.
The festivities start with the hugely popular Poole Harbour Boat Show organised by Poole Harbour Commissioners in association with Sunseeker. From Friday 7 June to Sunday 9 June the three-day extravaganza will bring together a spectacular array of yachts and motor cruisers, tall ships, marine equipment, water sports gear and clothing, with taster sessions, live music and fireworks to keep the whole family entertained!
The ever popular waterborne demos will be back again this year with the RNLI, Border Force and Poole Harbour Commissioners putting on fascinating displays to show what their work involves on a day to day basis.
On Saturday 15 June, there is swashbuckling fun on Poole Quay as Harry Paye Day celebrates Poole’s most infamous pirate.
Join in the free pirate themed family fun and entertainment organised by the Pirates of Poole, including muskets and cannon displays. There’s shanty singing, live music and a range of stalls as well as children’s rides, face painting and story-telling for younger members of the ship’s crew.
Dress up as a pirate and take part in the pirates’ parade at midday followed by a children’s best dressed pirate competition. Alternatively just relax and soak up the atmosphere.
During the afternoon you could also head along to Poole Museum at 2pm to hear guest speaker, Dave Parham from Bournemouth University, talk about the Swash Channel Wreck. The talk lasts approximately one hour and places must be booked in advance at www.poolemuseum.co.uk to avoid disappointment.
Fancy taking to the water and experience exciting watersports for free? If so, pop down to Poole Park on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June as Rockley Watersports is offering free taster sessions in kayaking, sailing or stand up paddleboarding. All sessions must be pre booked by calling Rockley Watersports on 01202 677272.
The month long festivities will come to a close with Pirates Castaways & Codfish at Scaplen’s Court, Poole Quay on Sunday 30 June from 11am to 4pm. Learn about Poole’s connection to Robinson Crusoe, meet characters from the town’s fascinating past and hear their captivating tales. There’s family entertainment throughout the day including building your own pirate ship.
Cllr Lewis Allison, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure and Communities, BCP Council, said: “We are delighted that event organisers are continuing to be part of Poole Maritime Festival this year creating a fantastic programme packed full of performances and entertainment to suit everyone’s tastes.
“Taking place every weekend throughout June, the family activities offer a greater opportunity for locals and visitors to get involved. Not only that, there’s additional events taking place in June from maritime book displays at Poole Libraries, Poole Rowing Regatta on 8 June at Hamworthy Park and raft building on 30 June at Poole Park plus much more. The variety of the events and the fact that most of these are free really means there is something for everyone to enjoy."
