BCP Council's 'New to You' shop hits record sales of £100,000

An eco-shop run selling reclaimed items dropped off at BCP Council household recycling centres is celebrating after raising a staggering £100,000.

The ‘New to You’ enterprise run out of the recycling centre in Cabot Lane in Poole hit their record sales this month. After costs, all money raised from the sale of items such as furniture, ornaments, toys, sporting equipment and bric a brac goes towards the running of frontline council services.

Staff and volunteers who run the venture were rewarded with a visit from the Council Leader Vikki Slade and presented with a festive gift to mark the achievement.

Councillor Slade said: “I have been really inspired by the work of the staff and volunteers at ‘New To You’.  This project has removed tonnes of items that have some value from landfill and raised an incredible £100,000 to support our council services.  We are also able to use the project to provide furniture and equipment for vulnerable people like the homeless, care leavers and prison leavers at no cost to the council and I want to thank the volunteers who give their time and the many residents who have purchased items.  I would encourage everyone to visit – it’s a real treasure trove.”

All goods given over to the shop have been rescued from the recycling centres rather than being recycled or sent to landfill. Reusing items is even more environmentally friendly than recycling

The shop located next to the Dolphin Indoor Bowls Club in Cabot Lane, is open most Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.

If you have any items you think are suitable for reuse please bring them to the Nuffield recycling centre in Poole or Millhams Community Recycling Centre in Bournemouth. Please advise a member of staff that your item is suitable for reuse.
