Microchipping is the most important way to identify a pet. It is legally compulsory for a dog and highly advised for all pets.

If a cat or dog is found and handed to us, it will be scanned to reveal its microchip number.

We will then contact the database to obtain the owner's details and contact the owner to inform them we have their pet. It's therefore important that owners ensure their contact details are kept up to date.

The pet microchip:

  • is the size of a grain of rice
  • is quick and easy to implant
  • requires no anaesthetic, whatever the species of animal
  • has its own unique number
  • is only as painful as a standard injection

Your pets and your details are registered against this number and held on a central database for the life of your pet.

Most vet practices offer a microchipping service, as do many animal rescue centres and groomers. Costs can vary.

If your pet is already chipped, you must make sure that the information held on the register is up to date. This helps us reunite a lost pet with their owner with minimal fuss.
