The next phase of major infrastructure improvements in the Wallisdown area will improve safety and encourage more people to walk or cycle in the area.
This scheme forms part of the wider Wallisdown Corridor improvements and will focus on the western part of Wallisdown Road, from Mountbatten Arms roundabout to Bryant Road Junction. To minimise the impact on local residents and businesses, the scheme will be delivered in a number of phases.
These phases will:
- introduce new controlled crossings near Sunnymoor Road and reposition the existing crossings at Discovery Court and Canford Avenue
- install protected cycleways and footpaths along the majority of the route with priority across side roads
- improve the footpaths along the corridor and narrowing the side roads crossings to improve safety
- support bus travel with better stops, waiting areas, shelters and live passenger information points
- reduce the speed limit to 30mph, ensuring lower vehicle speeds and create a safer environment for all road users
- create a more attractive area for residents with tree planting and landscaping
Phase 1 was completed in 2020 and 2021, from Mountbatten Arms to Benbow Crescent.
Phase 2 was completed in 2023 (from Bryant Road to Scott Road).
The Wallisdown West improvements support our priorities for a greener and more sustainable environment. The improvements will encourage more people to choose healthier and more environmentally friendly travel options, by improving accessibility and safety.
You can see representations of the planned improvements in our visual exhibition.

Latest updates and information
We will keep this section updated with the latest progress on the scheme.
Phase 3 update – June 2025
Phase 3 of the Wallisdown Road West improvement scheme began in 2024. Since then, we have completed:
- the northern footway and cycle lane from Canford Avenue to the Turbary Common entrance
- the footway on the southern side of Wallisdown Road and the ramped access into the service road
To minimise disruption to the local road network, works were on pause while other infrastructure projects took place in the area.
Work resumed on 8 September 2025 to complete the remaining works, which include:
- installing the cycle lane on the southern side of Wallisdown Road
- replacing 2 bus stops
- resurfacing the northern footway
- vegetation planting along the route
- upgrading the signalised pedestrian crossing
These works are expected to be completed by 13 December 2025.
Traffic management during construction
Some footpaths will be temporarily closed to pedestrians at various times during construction.
We are aiming to keep the road open as much as possible. However, to keep the public and our workforce safe, there will be two closures:
Westbound lane closure
Wallisdown Road will be closed to westbound traffic between Scott Road and Benbow Crescent from 8 September to 1 December 2025.
Full road closure
Wallisdown Road will be closed to all traffic in both directions between Scott Road and Benbow Crescent from 2 December to 13 December 2025.
Where possible, we will keep access open for residents and businesses within the closed areas. We will be in touch to discuss individual access requirements before the full closure.
A signed diversion route will be in place via Kinson Road, Wimborne Road and Ringwood Road.
Footpaths will sometimes be closed temporarily during the works - we will provide diversions and temporary crossings at these times.
Funding
The scheme is part funded by a Local Growth Fund investment from Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (Dorset LEP) and by BCP Council.
