Glenferness Avenue

Work on new walking, wheeling and cycling improvements on Glenferness Avenue between Talbot roundabout and Elgin Road (south) is underway.

It forms part of a sustainable travel route between Bournemouth town centre and Ferndown. It will link into the sustainable travel improvements planned further south in the Glenferness Avenue area around Leven Avenue, Benellen Avenue and Branksome Wood Road and into the new walking and cycling facilities through Upper Gardens.

News update

6 March 2024: Alongside two local schools, Bournemouth University staff and students, Councillor Andy Hadley and members of the project team, we held a grand launch to celebrate the opening of the two new bridges, toucan crossing and junction improvements.

Work completed to date:

  • Two new four-metre-wide, 37.5-metre-long prefabricated bridges for walking and cycling were lifted into position over the railway line either side of the existing road bridge during a 27-hour window in October 2023. The existing footbridge on the eastern side of the road bridge has been removed and recycled. The existing road bridge remains unaltered.
  • Bridge ramps and stepped cycle lanes have been built between Elgin Road and Alyth Road.
  • Junction improvements at East Avenue.
  • A new toucan crossing just north of East Avenue.

Traffic management

Alford Road, between Glenferness Avenue and Huntly Road, is currently closed to motorised traffic to accommodate a fenced work compound.

The following traffic management is in place on Glenferness Avenue between Talbot roundabout and just south of Elgin Road (north entrance). It will include short periods of:

  • Narrowing the road width of Glenferness Avenue, but retaining two-way traffic
  • Two-way temporary traffic signals on Glenferness Avenue
  • Temporary closures of side road junctions with Glenferness Avenue
  • Temporary closures of Glenferness Avenue

Closures are also planned on Glenferness Avenue between 8-15 April and 18 April-15 May.

Between Monday 8 and Friday 12 April, Glenferness Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic between Talbot roundabout and Alford Road for surfacing and installation of road markings.

Between Monday 15 April and Friday 10 May, Glenferness Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic between Talbot roundabout and Roslin Road South (west side).

On both occasions, access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times.

Outstanding improvements

  • Light segregation (specific design detail is to be confirmed) for cycling either side of Glenferness Avenue between Talbot roundabout and Elgin Road (south entrance). This requires changes to waiting restrictions which was subject to a separate legal process. A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was advertised and consulted on during February and March 2022. The decision to make the order was made on 23 May 2023. Further information is available here
  • Tree planting near the bridges (scheduled for spring 2024).

Public consultation

Public consultation on these plans was undertaken 24 February to 31 March 2021.

All responses were analysed and helped shape the final scheme designs and a report summarising the results of consultation published in addition to our responses to the issues raised.

A public information event was also held on Wednesday 10 November 2021 at Bournemouth University.
